The journey to become a professional wireline logging engineer starts when an organization hires you as a new field engineer in training. As I mentioned before, the logging engineer profession is challenging mentally, emotionally, and physically and it is not for everyone. Some candidates become interested in the profession simply because of the high earning potential without fully understanding what the job entails. Although the reward is attractive, the demands are equally challenging and require people of certain attitudes to survive the physical, emotional, and mental rigor the job demands. For this reason, most wireline services organizations have designed a pre-school program as the starting point for a new hire. The pre-school program exposes the new engineer to what the job entails and allows him or her to decide if the job and the schedule fit his or her life style.

The pre-school period allows the new employee to have some exposure to the work environment before committing to join the organization. At this time, the new hire signs a temporary contract with the organization which allows him or her go through the pre-school program without committing to full employment with the organization. The pre-school period usually lasts for one to three months. During this period the potential employee spends time in a field location working with full time logging engineers and crew on rig site mostly as an observer. The new hire is usually assigned a training program and a mentor. The mentor is a senior field engineer who will help the new hire go through the pre-school program and evaluate his or her readiness to go to basic logging engineers' training school.

During the pre-school, the new hire must accomplished several key tasks required of a field engineer. This period is especially challenging for a new hire because he or she is exposed to many different new tasks all of which he or she must master in relatively short time. The pre-school period is also stressful because the new trainee engineer is the favorite for all full fledge field engineer to assign their various extra duties. The pre-school period is designed to test the physical, mental, and emotional strength of the trainee engineer to the limit while helping him or her to learn the rudimentary of the logging engineer profession. Most new hire will pretty much make up his or her mind whether this is the right job or not before the end of the pre-school period.

After completing the pre-school successfully, a new hire can decide to accept the offer of a full employment with the organization. The new hire is then ready to continue the next stage in the training program which is attending the basic school for logging engineers. What worked well though are the parental controls. One can chooose to limit user access to sites which have pornography, drugs, or online games. There are also interesting block options such as the occult, weapons and military, to name a few. So if you set controls to limit "illegal drugs", a search for ecstasy will allow you to read online news about the drug but not visit websites dedicated to the drug itself.

Conclusion, Zone Alarm is easy to use and handles most of the work. However, the omission of any Internet surfing security features is glaring.…

English is now spoken in over 100 countries around the globe and for the approximately 1.5 billion who speak it there exists an endless array of vernaculars-to be expected when you consider that for more than half that number, English is a second or learned language. But for the remaining 328-plus million people worldwide for whom English is the actual mother tongue, you will find an equally broad range of dialects and accents. If English is your first language, you should have no problem distinguishing an Australian accent from a South African one, or differentiating between an Irishman and a Scot. Neither, will you fail to miss the astonishing dissimilarity between a Newfoundlander from Canada and a Texan from the Southwestern United States-and the comparisons go on and on! Mind you, this holds true for almost all of the other major language groups of the world such as Chinese, Hindi, Arabic, etc., each of whom possess their own dizzying collections of syntax and pronunciations. Speaking of which, let's consider for a moment the single most widely spoken language in the world today, which happens to be Mandarin. It is the official language of China but it's by no means a simple affair encompassing about 7 dialects and 42 sub-dialects; and, here's the clincher, Mandarin is not the only language spoken in China! If you have future plans to trek across The Middle Kingdom, prepare yourself for encounters with Cantonese, Gan, Hakka, Huainan, Jin, Min, Wu, and Xiang, not to mention all their associated dialects and sub-dialects. And if that's still not enough, you might want to brace yourself for an additional 1500 or so dialects if you decide to wander into the tens of thousands of villages scattered throughout that vast nation. After those kinds of breathtaking numbers, the English language might seem a little tame in comparison. Actually, you would be somewhat remiss because English is not, shall we say, without its challenges. Simply peruse the Ethnologue, 16^th Edition, M. Paul Lewis, Editor (an encyclopedic reference cataloging the world's nearly 7,000 known living languages), and you will soon discover some highly telling statistics where English dialects are concerned. For instance, in the United Kingdom alone you will find something in the order of 34 distinct dialects!

So what then is the "correct" way to speak English? Is there one ideal to which we must all aspire? Some would hastily bestow that crown upon the birthplace of the English language-the British Isles. The thing is, even on those densely populated pieces of real estate you're going to find a spectacular number of dialects (as already mentioned), due in large part to hundreds of years of linguistic evolution. Nevertheless, there is a lingering notion that the "superior" English accent is and always will be "Received Pronunciation" (RP), also known as the Queen's (or King's) English. And why not-let's face it, it just sounds so bloody good! Just listen to some of the better-known Brit actors like Hugh Grant, Colin Firth and Helen Mirren and I rest my case! But, is that reason enough to laud it shamelessly as many still do? The famous British playwright George Bernard Shaw, in his literary tour de force Pygmalion (1913), explored that very notion as he sought to make a critical statement on the superficiality of class, social status and language (with special focus on the "proper English accent"). In the story, we observe how phonetics professor Henry Higgins makes a wager with his friend Colonel Pickering that he can transform a thick-accented Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, into an eloquent duchess within three months. Professor Higgins readily accepts the bet because he prides himself on being able to determine where a person comes from by simply identifying their accent. Of course, the Professor recognizes that Eliza's linguistic transformation will require some doing, but he feels completely up to the task because he comes armed with several pronunciation tricks designed to help the poor girl pronounce her vowels, diphthongs and consonants "in the way that she should." For example, to help improve her elocution he has her put marbles in her mouth and repeat the sentence, "The shallow depression in the west of these islands is likely to move in a more easterly direction." To help her pronounce her /h/, he has her say over and over again, "But in Hampshire, Hereford and Hartford hurricanes hardly ever happen." After endless days of strenuous work, Eliza's transformation from "draggle-tailed guttersnipe" into a refined, well-spoken lady is complete. When she utters the words, "How kind of you to let me come," at the Embassy Ball, everyone is dazzled by her flawless speech and impeccable pronunciation.

But let's chow down on some reality cookies right about here and fast-forward to the real world of today where no English teacher in their right mind would pull a 'Professor Higgins' on a group of students. First of all, the 21^st century has adopted certain pet mantras not the least of which is being "politically" and "socially correct" at all costs. This new mindset has seen today's language teachers place far greater importance on developing a student's ability to communicate well rather than pronounce meticulously. After all, sounding 100% like a native speaker is of little or no value if the comprehension and communication skills are sub par. Nowhere is this more evident than with today's technology. It has allowed the world to mingle more, so to speak, and most notably on the Internet where English largely rules the bandwidth waves. The reason for this is that English is the language of big business, and as we all know money doesn't make the distinction on whether somebody speaks English like Jackie Chan or Sir John Gielgud. In fact, when contrasting the careers of those two gentlemen, both of them actors, it's Jackie Chan who comes out on top in sheer English film box office receipts while Mr. Gielgud had his British knighthood as well as his "Companion of Honour" and "Order of Merit" awards to keep him warm during his lifetime. But, there's still a far broader-reaching question that begs asking and that is what's wrong with having an accent anyway? To cite from one of my own personal teaching experiences, the greatest majority of my students have come from a French background. Invariably, the very first thing I always tell my newbies is that there's absolutely nothing wrong with speaking English with their "delightful" French accents! In fact, we should all be so lucky to speak like that!

So does this mean that striving for the perfect English accent and pronunciation is as dead as the Dodo? Well, actually let's just remove the word "perfect" out of the equation. Students should by all means still try to attain good pronunciation and a pleasant accent. How can they achieve that? It involves five factors that will absolutely make the difference, and they are as follows: a) Voicing, b) Mouth, Tongue, andLip Position, c) Stress and Rhythm, d) Intonation, and e) Word Parts. Let's take a brief look at each of them, starting with Voicing. In English, some sounds are 'voiced,' (the voice box is used) while others are 'voiceless' (the voice box is not used). This can be illustrated with 'plurals' ending in "s". When the plural word is 'voiced,' the "s" is pronounced /z/; unvoiced and the "s" is pronounced /s/. Secondly, we must consider the position of the Mouth, Tongue and Lips. Here, you could draw simple diagrams of tongue and lip positions, or have students imitate you as you model sounds for them-all while having a clear view of your mouth, lip, and tongue movements. After that, comes Stress and Rhythm. In English, the distinction between stressed and unstressed syllables is that stressed syllables are louder, longer and more clearly articulated, while unstressed ones are shorter, compressed, and said very quickly. The way ESL students will learn them is through lots of practice and examples. Intonation is also very important because it indicates the speaker's intentions. So learning to understand the different pitch/variations in English is critical. Finally, we have Word Parts, close cousins of 'voicing.' Basically, the Past Participle of regular verbs (ending in -Ed) has three possible pronunciations-[t]; [d]; [id].

In conclusion, although the foregoing are all necessary elements for achieving good pronunciation, it should again be stressed that students of English should not have the slightest sense of feeling inadequate if speaking like a native is not achieved. It is of far greater importance to have nice, natural phrasing. Besides, as we've already discussed, having a 'foreign accent' is not always a negative thing. Take celebrated French Chef Jacques Pépin for example. He was Charles de Gaulle's personal chef before immigrating to the United States in 1959 and is credited for almost single handedly bringing the French cooking craze to North America. He is a bona fide star, and I'm willing to wager that it probably has something to do with that charming French accent he has when he speaks English!…

Knitting is Easy to Learn

Anyone from young children to the elderly can learn to knit. You can have a knitting friend or family member teach you, get a book out of the library, or watch learn to knit tutorials online. Whatever learning style works best for you, there is a way to learn knitting.

In addition to being able to find knitting supplies in many places, knitting can also go many places. My knitting has accompanied me in countless waiting rooms, meetings and even to the hospital when I had my children. Small knitting projects, like hats, scarfs and mittens are easy to tuck into a purse or backpack and take along wherever you go.

I generally take easy projects that don't require any counting or concentration when I'm knitting in public or while watching television, and save complicated cables for when my children are sleeping and I can give my knitting all of my focus.

Make Things for Yourself and Others

Nothing shows love in quite the same way as a handmade gift. People generally love knowing that a garment or accessory was made just for them. You can also make items exactly to your own specifications, which is one of my favorite things about knitting. For example, I love fingerless gloves. However, I'm fussy about just how I like them. I like neutral colors, washable yarn, and for gloves to be long in the arm and short on the hand. It's very difficult to find these type of gloves in stores, but I can easily make my own in a night or two.

Knitting allows you to customize items in exactly the way you want, which can be a big plus, especially if you are a hard to fit size or have particular standards in mind for clothes or accessories.

One would expect a quality product from a notorious company such as Symantec. Since PCs are attacked by threats within the first 15 seconds of being connected to the internet, it seems as though it would be a great idea to buy a protection suite from a larger company. For the purpose of preventing, detecting, and removing threats, Norton Security 2006 does its job very well. Nonetheless, I advise avoiding this product at all costs.

Positives:

I compared Norton Security to the freeware virus protection program Avast! and was impressed by the improvement. Norton removed threats that were not touched with Avast!, and I have not had a virus contaminate my machine for more than a few seconds, for Norton eradicates threats almost instantaneously with its active scan feature, which allows Norton to run in the background. The interface is easy enough to navigate; it is simple, yet effectively organized, as well as easy on the eyes. However, there are some things that are terribly wrong with this product.

Negatives:

Thus far the product has sounded like an excellent source of protection. What could be so terrible about it? The suite is so buggy, I often wonder if Symantec completely forgot to check for bugs and released it after its initial development. First of all, about 70% of the time when you attempt to access Norton's main menu, it does absolutely nothing. No response. However, click it again, and it may work the second time, although usually incorrectly. Take a look at the screen shots below and see how Norton showed up on my screen when I attempted to launch it. Often times, Norton will launch the outline of the menu, with the middle (all of the important stuff) being blank. The solution? Reboot. Often times, reboot more than once – if you are lucky, Norton may just allow to you access its menus.

Oh, but there are more Norton annoyances than a menu that refuses to appear. Many people these days have a Google Mail account. Unfortunately for those who do, Norton interferes with Gmail operations, leading to messages being blocked and message content disappearing. Solution? Attempt to access your firewall settings through Norton's menu (good luck with that) and reconfigure.

Yet one more annoyance keeps me from liking this suite. One would expect an security program to ask the user if a certain program is allowed to access the internet or not. For example, for someone who wants to play poker online, Norton should ask if that program is allowed to access the internet, just to confirm that it is not spyware that you inherited from somewhere. But the programmers at Symantec had the idea that this process should be automated! That's great, in theory. However, often times, Norton just takes initiative and decides to block certain programs' connection to the internet without your consent. Since Norton has decided to block your favorite online poker program from the internet, it looks like you will have to do a bit of work to undermine it. Once again, you will have to attempt the unthinkable – access Norton's menus. From the firewall settings, you can have Norton scan for programs that can access the internet and compile a list for you to manually change the connection settings for. So, after about 7 or more minutes of waiting for Norton to scan your entire drive, you can manually explain to Norton that online poker is not spyware or some other intruder, and – if you are lucky – Norton will comply and let you play.

As you compare the short paragraph containing the positives to the essay of compiled negatives, you can see that Norton Security 2006 just is not worth the hassle – or the $70 price tag. Although it does have a good set of features, so does practically any other anti-virus program that is not freeware. Do yourself a favor and walk past this program at your local electronics store.

There are people who have downsized and like the fact that housework is at a minimum, and there are those who just believe that living in small spaces is really just all they need.

Some studio units have a kitchenette within the main body of the unit, with the bathroom as a separate room. There are other studios that are slightly larger and have the kitchen as a separate room. Then there are the units that have an alcove bedroom off the main living area, whatever the configuration it pays to think wisely before buying furniture.

Tips for Small Space Living

• One of the best investments that the homeowner can make would have to be in purchasing a pull up bed that sits within the framework of a bookcase. The bed is pulled down every night and when not in use is transferred back into it’s recess, this then makes for a more user friendly living area.
• The use of half or fold out tables that fit snugly against the wall is also a good way to maximize the space and minimize the need for bulky furniture
• The use of bifold doors eliminates the loss of space when a door is open
• Painting the unit in neutral colors will open the area up and make it look larger
• Then using the monochromatic color scheme choose furnishings that do not take over the room
• Using mirrors on the walls is a well used decorating trick that will make the space appear to be larger than it is
• Clear out the clutter; the space will look much bigger with fewer items about the place
• Eliminate a desk top computer and replace it with its small cousin the lap top computer; it’s far more space friendly

Living in a small space can be an exciting adventure allowing for a certain amount of creativity to decorate the small space. However, once the feel of the new environment is achieved the benefits will be immense. The need for less furniture will definitely translate to fewer costs and then the cost of maintaining the furniture and appliances will be much less than for people who allegedly have everything. This is a simple craft that grew from a Girl Scout Brownie Try It. One of the activities to earn the "All in the Family" badge is to make a family time capsule. This is a simple and cheap project. There are 2 specialty supplies needed. Adult supervision is also needed, but an 8 year old can do most of the work. We started with a box my husband made, for this project, out of scrap wood. The lid is attached with screws. This makes a nice box, worthy of display.

Materials:
Wax paper to cover work surface
Wooden box, made or bought at the craft store (11 x 5 ½ x 7 inches)
1 bottle Mod Podge (4 oz)
Sponge brush
Assorted papers
Scissors
Paint pen
Memorabilia

1. Cover work surface with wax paper.
2. Collect papers to attach to the box. Since this is a family time capsule we used pictures cut from brochures left over from vacation as well as ticket stubs. We also cut logos of favorite games and activities. Post cards, stamps, and stickers can also be used. Have each member of the family select images that are special to them.
3. Once the papers are assembled it is time to glue them on. The process of decoupage is very simple. Using a sponge brush spread the Mod Podge on one side of the box. Paint the back of the paper with Mod Podge. Then lay the paper on the wood surface. Use your finger to smooth the paper out. Get all the air bubbles out. Brush more Mod Podge on the paper, again smooth out. Keep adding glue and papers until that side of the box is covered. Cover the entire side with a layer of glue. Allow to dry. It doesn't take long, 30 minutes or so. Then continue to add glue until the surface is even and you like the appearance of the box. You can go on to another side as you wait. Follow this technique until all sides of the box are complete.
4. For the lid, use a paint pen to write when the box can be opened. We chose 2031. That will be 20 years in the future. Then use glue and paper to continue the technique used on the rest of the box. I used an entire 4 oz bottle on our box. Thick papers take more layers of glue. Allow the box to dry well before moving on to the next step.
5. Fill the box. Have each member of the family find items that represent them. Some of our items are silly bands, game pieces, newspaper, CD cover, score cards, postcards, and family photo. Items chosen should reflect the persons interest now. My daughter collects silly bands, so she added 2 of those. She also loves legos, so we added a mini figure. Talk about why you are adding these items. If you can't think of what to add, ask for help. Your family knows you very well, they can help you decide what to add.
6. When the box is full seal the box closed. Place the box in a prime location for all to see.Such a simple craft, the whole family will enjoy.
