WCC (World Church of the Creator), who surprisingly worked with NA (National Alliance) on this one, picked a good town to stir up racism in. It is no surprise that the WCC is trying to channel attitudes toward the recent influx of Somali residents into racist ideology. When city officials (i.e., Mayor Raymond) make blatantly racist statements against the Somali people, and the Lewiston police department participates in their own hate crimes against local Somalis, it makes it easier for people in the community to think that being racist is normal and the answer to the city's problems.

The York police department was ready for something big on February 20th. Walking through the quiet streets of York, squads of half a dozen police decked out in full riot gear could be seen on every corner. Besides what seemed like every cop in the York, dozens of state troopers were on duty that day to try to prevent antifascist protesters from disrupting speeches by a small group of racists from the Nationalist Movement (NM).

When examining the anarchists engagement with 1930s antifascism and when analysing their apparently equivocal attitude towards the Front populaire, we have to bear in mind Daniel Guérin's distinction between what he calls the "Popular Front - an electoral alliance between social democracy, stalinism and bourgeois liberalism - and the "Popular Front - a powerful, extra-parliamentary movement, the initiative for which came from the working class: "the true popular front, the popular front of the streets and not of the politicians". The anarchists were careful to distinguish between the Popular Front's leaders - the politicians - and its working-class supporters, and they enthused over "the fraternity, the solidarity and the strength of the working class" manifested in the extra-parliamentary antifascist movement of 1934-35. They also took an active part in that movement, and in some respects a leading part.

August 24th, the National Alliance, the largest and most active neo-nazi group in North America, will be marching in Washington, DC. Their march is a direct threat to the safety and well being of people of color, disabled people, queer people, trade unionists, and activists and radicals of all progressive movements. It's time for anarchists, and other anti-authoritarian, anti-state, anti-capitalist revolutionaries to confront them.

Making the World Safe for Fascism: Free Speech and the Worship of Civil Liberties

Americans are raised to hold some things sacred. God, motherhood, the flag, and free markets are among the icons our children genuflect before. As leftists we question or reject the sanctity of some or all of these institutions, in varying degrees according to our ideology and inclinations. And yet we have our own herd of sacred cattle at whose cloven feet we worship. Chief among these holy relics is the United States Constitution, most especially it’s first ten amendments, known as the Bill of Rights. In particular the first amendment, that includes the civil right to the exercise of free speech, is held sacrosanct.

Maine has a sad history when it comes to racism and xenophobia. In the early 1900s Maine had over 150,000 active members of the KKK, more than all but a few of the states in the South. It was Franco-Americans who bore the brunt of their attacks, but the Irish Catholics were also a target. Today it is the National Alliance and the World Church of the Creator who are attempting to carry on the historic legacy of the Klan in Maine. These racists are anti-chistrian, anti-semitic, racist, sexist, and homophobic to their core. They are just as violent as the Klan of old and are seeking to regain the numbers they once had. They provide no real answers to the problems of lack of affordable housing, shrinking job market, and sagging education system. Instead they seek to divide communities and plant seeds of hatred. We must not allow this to occur in our communities.

Opposition to Neo-Nazi March in Toledo

On Saturday October 15th, the National Socialist Movement - better known as America's Nazi Party - has announced that they will be marching through North Toledo to protest black crime. The march route they have chosen takes them directly through a predominantly African-American and Polish community, where residents are preparing to oppose these fascists.

Anti-fascists from the Midwest are planning to join local residents in protesting against this neo-Nazi invasion of a Toldeo neighborhood. A counter-demonstration has been called for 8:30AM at Manhattan Plaza (near Manhattan and Stickney Avenues in the North End). Local anti-fas have received word that they will be joined by members of Anti-Racist Action and other organizations from all over the country.

Revolutionary Anti-Fascism: A Necessity And An Obligation

To many of us, the concept of militant resistance to fascism and racism comes almost naturally. Essentially all currents of revolutionary anarchism or Marxism agree on at least this simple principle: Fascists cannot be allowed to speak, organize, march, or have a platform in any way shape or form. It is a matter of basic safety, for ourselves as revolutionaries, and for all of those who, because they for some reason, be it the color of their skin, their sexual orientation, their nationality, or what have you, do not fit the norm of a proper Aryan, and therefore become targets for fascist aggression every time they leave their homes.

Revolutionary Antifascism And ARA: A Point For Discussion

ARA is very effective street level organization willing to use various degrees of education, direct action and righteous violence to combat fascist thugs. However, without any sort of unifying politics beyond going where the fascists go, not relying on the cops and courts, and non-sectarian defense of anti-fascists, and being against racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, and homophobia, ARA is left as an organization that reacts to whatever our enemy of the day is doing instead of advancing long term goals. This, I believe, is a major reason that it is difficult to start ARA where there isn't a large violent neo-nazi / KKK problem already and the reason that ARA chapters often fold once the local fascists have been driven back underground where they re-group and re-emerge at a later date.
